MCF-12A细胞株是一种上皮细胞，源自一位60岁白人女性患者的乳腺腺体。MCF-12A细胞系是一种非致瘤性上皮细胞系，确切来源于一位未生育过的女性在缩胸手术中取出的组织，该患者患有纤维囊性乳腺疾病，并伴有导管内增生的局部区域。MCF-12A 细胞表现出典型的管腔上皮形态、胶原蛋白的三维生长，并在汇合培养物中形成圆顶。这些细胞的上皮细胞角蛋白8、14和18呈阳性，而细胞角蛋白19呈阴性。激素受体状态：ER（雌激素受体）、PR（孕激素受体）和HER2均为阴性，符合正常乳腺上皮细胞特征，常用于与乳腺癌细胞系（如MCF7、MDA-MB-231）对比研究。
